Allotments are very popular with city dwellers everywhere but here in St. Etienne where once people worked mostly in cole mines and steel foundries, allotments are specially popular. The gardeners are very varied from a perfect Frenchwoman with her lettuces to a Sicilian ex-miner and the huge fig tree he has grown from a seedling he brought from his native Palermo.
